Nissan Launching Vehicles with Autonomous Driving Technology

Nissan and its partner Renault have announced they will be launching more than 10 vehicles with autonomous drive technology in the next four years. The cars with autonomous capabilities will be sold around the world, including in the United States, Europe, Japan and China. Nissan will also be installing this technology on mainstream, mass-market vehicles, making it affordable for more people.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is committed to the goals of having zero emissions and zero fatalities. With up to 90 percent of all traffic fatalities caused by driver error, autonomous drive technology is expected to help reduce that statistic.

Safety technology developed by Nissan has already helped reduce fatal and serious injuries in Nissan vehicles in Japan by 61 percent over the last 20 years. Sales of nearly 300,000 electric vehicles like the Nissan LEAF have also helped reduce emissions dramatically.

This year, some Nissan vehicles will receive single-lane control, which will allow cars to drive autonomously on highways, even in stop-and-go traffic. In 2018, the company is planning on launching multiple-lane control in vehicles, which will allow autonomous negotiating of hazards and the ability to change lanes during highway driving.

In 2020, Nissan will launch “intersection autonomy,” which will allow vehicles to navigate city intersections and heavy urban traffic completely autonomously.

Nissan will also be launching a new automotive app for smartphones this year, which will allow for remote interaction with its vehicles. A new Alliance Multimedia System is set to launch next year, bringing improved smartphone integration and wireless map updates.
