Both the Nissan Altima and the Toyota Camry received five out of five stars in overall crash protection and side impact protection by the Federal Government. However, when it came to the frontal impact protection, the 2016 Altima did better than the 2016 Camry receiving a five star rating while the Camry only received four stars.
PERFORMANCE
Both the Altima and the Camry come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine but that’s where the comparison ends. The 2016 Altima’s engine is also paired with an advanced Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) that allows the engine to gain impressive fuel economy of 27 city and 38 highway mpg according to Newcars.com. In comparison, the Camry’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is paired with an older six-speed automatic transmission which gives it just 25 city and 35 highway miles. The 2016 Nissan Altima engines provides 180 lb-ft of torque and 182 horsepower, while 2016 Camry engine provides only for 170 lb-ft of torque and 178 horsepower. The Nissan Altima does a better job transmitting power to its wheels due to the higher torque ratio that it has compared to the Toyota Camry.
The difference in fuel efficiency comes from the different transmissions. The Altima uses a fuel efficient CVT and they usually have a droning noise that will accompany a CVT but Altima has made an effort to decrease the dreaded droning with its d-step” logic that mimics stepped gears and they increased the insulation in the cabin. In comparison, the Toyota Camry uses the basic 6-speed transmission that everyone else uses which works well but it just doesn’t give you the fuel efficient that a CVT does. The 2016 Altima also offers a larger fuel tank, combined with its already superior fuel economy, means that you will have a lot fewer stops at the gas station than a Toyota Camry.
INTERIOR AND TECHNOLOGY
When it comes to technology, the 2016 Nissan Altima vs. the 2016 Toyota Camry are pretty comparable. They both have similar features such Toyota Camry’s Entune and the Nissan Altima’s NissanConnect offer Siri Eyes Free4 and SiriusXM®. They both come with a 7-inch screen although lower Toyota packages have only a 6.1 inch screen. There is a difference in the safety function of the NissanConnect 3 that Toyota’s Entune doesn’t have which is connecting you to a live agent when the air bags deploy or with the touch of a button.
