 What’s New for the 2017 Nissan Altima?

The 2017 Nissan Altima—which comes at the tail end of the midsize sedan’s fifth production cycle—remains largely unchanged. That’s understandable, because just the year before, the best-seller from Nissan received a major facelift. The exterior and interior styling were updated, the sound insulation was increased, the drivetrain and mechanical components were retuned, and new safety and infotainment options were introduced. Plus, the SR trim made its debut in 2016, and it rolls over into 2017: positioning itself between the base-level model and S; and the upper-level SV and SL.

With the 2017 Altima, you have the choice between two engines. There’s a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) with 179 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque; and there’s a 3.5-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque. A continuously variable transmission is hooked up to each engine, with gearless operation for conserving energy and making driving a smoother experience. If you go with the I4 you can achieve up to 27/36 mpg in fuel economy. And if you go with the V6, you have the added advantage of paddle shifters and a manual shift mode to simulate a gear-shifting driving feel. As a five-seater, the 2017 Altima provides up to 101.9 cubic feet in passenger volume. The SR trim and higher gets 8-way power adjustability with 2-way power lumbar support on the driver’s seat; the SR in particular has sports-style cloth trim. The top-level SL exclusively gets 4-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat, as well as leather seat trim and front-seat heating capability.

At the base level, the 2017 Nissan Altima is furnished with comfort and convenience features like Bluetooth® for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, remote keyless entry, push-button engine start, remote trunk release, illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls, a four-speaker stereo system, and a 4.3-inch LCD screen added to the instrument cluster called the Advanced Drive-Assist® Display. Going up in trim increases your chances of getting options, additions, or enhancements like auto-dimming on the rearview mirror, a rearview camera, cruise control, HomeLink® for remote-controlling home features like garage doors and security systems, hands-free text messaging, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote vehicle start, a 5- or 7-inch color display, a three-month SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription, and a nine-speaker Bose® premium sound system. For safety, the 2017 Altima has electronic stability control, all-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, active understeer control, and eight airbags. The SV and SL trims are further enhanced with the addition of blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert.
